THE RE-RESURRECTION OF JESUS

THE RE-RESURRECTION OF JESUS
© Farouk Asvat

THE RE-RESURRECTION OF JESUS,
THE MYSTIFICATION OF THE MYTH
& THE DISTORTION OF THE TRUTH

And now, suddenly, after more than 60 years, there is a return to stories from The Bible:
Noah, Exodus; A.D: the story continues and The Messengers.  And now even, Lucifer, is coming to a screen near you.

A.D: the story continues went to ludicrous lengths to tell the story of the apostles.  Historically and biblically completely inaccurate, it portrayed Peter as possessing the powers of life and death - and the disciples too had miraculous powers of healing - powers which were given exclusively to the Messiah by God.  The series also strongly conveyed the idea that contributing all your wealth to the Church, at the risk of death by Peter, was a requirement of Christianity: this is ludicrous, since Jesus absolutely rejected the concept of accumulating wealth - as quoted several times in the Gospels.

The Messengers was an extremely pitiful attempt to portray the idea of satan and the four horsemen of the apocalypse in an endless battle for souls - the good guys suddenly realizing they were "angels," sprouting massive wings, and having super powers.

The last time there really was an attempt to capture stories from the Bible was the 1960's: The Greatest Story Ever Told and The Ten Commandments were quite genuine attempts at portraying the stories from The Bible - a time when movies still stuck to being true to the original texts or history, at the risk of a hail of criticism - unlike the modern concept of being totally irresponsible by portraying invented versions not only of fiction but of historical facts as well - having no basis in the original texts.

Besides the movies which Christians considered extremely controversial: 1970's Jesus Christ Superstar; 1980's The Last Temptation Of Christ; Mel Gibson's pornographic display of violence in The Passion Of The Christ; and the cartoon portrayal of Moses and Pharaoh, it has become completely unfashionable in the western media to promote anything resembling religion - and yet the western leaders fall back on it whenever it suits them.

But now, after losing the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, and the number of casualties - both dead and maimed - Americans and Europeans need to be reassured that there is life after death, that there are American superheroes out there battling against Satan, and Muslims.  So once again the reassurance that resurrection is a reality or at least a possibility.

Or is it merely an attempt by some sectors of society for a return to Christian values? - which might partly be good, if it is spiritually motivated, as Pope Francis is trying to do within the confines of the Church - since it would be a return to a semblance of morality in a western world consumed by rampant materialism and become devoid of all morality.

However, overall, there is no attempt at promoting spiritual Christianity in the media.  Instead Good Friday and Easter Monday have been replaced by "easter" eggs and bunnies.  Christmas in parts of Europe is all about Saint Nicholas and Black Peter.  Fables and myths from paganism and the observance of the winter solstice have all been incorporated into the "celebration" of Christmas, and the birth of Christ institutionalised in the churches in December (and in January by the Orthodox churches) - even though Jesus was born in the summer of the northern summer.

So, instead of promoting the message of Jesus, December (from early November) has become a time of endless jingles on radio stations and in shopping malls, and endless programmes on tv about father "Christmas" dressed in a red outfit popularized by coca cola - of sleighs and reindeers and elfs and gifts, which has everything to do with promoting capitalism and commercialism, and nothing to do with the Christian religion or its spiritual philosophy.  And these images have become so pervasive, they are now completely internationalised.

Even greetings have been now been imposed by the supposedly politically correct liberals: insisting that people not say "Merry Christmas," but use the generic "Happy Holidays;" to the point that even many Christians have stopped wishing and praying for a "Blessed Christmas".

So sadly, there is simply no mention of Jesus, the Messiah, as a historical figure, and even less mention of his teachings.

SOUTH AFRICANS

SOUTH AFRICANS
© Farouk Asvat

South Africans are completely devoid of love.  Besides being completely materialistic, there is absolutely nothing spiritual or philosophical about them.  The only things they are interested in are shebeens, sports, soap operas and sex - in that order.

They are also completely ungrateful, as evidenced by their lack of appreciation for the Cuban doctors and health workers sent by Fidel Castro to help with the inequalities left by the apartheid regime.  They were also completely critical of a series of international soccer coaches that came to prepare them for the world cup - dismissing all of them within a short period, complaining that these renowned coaches did not understand them, that South Africans knew better.  In both cases displaying a complete unwillingness and inability to learn.

This was most evident when the white regime was exchanged for a black regime, and people who had spent years in prison (and one would suppose would have had infinite time to reflect); and people who had spent years in exile in the west and in communist countries (and one would suppose would have learned from the wide world out there) - returned to the country, and were soon sucked into the parochial mentality of the natives - instead of the exiles influencing the locals about what they should have learned from being abroad for decades.

Furthermore, all the communist, socialist and left wing politicians became capitalists and billionaires overnight - co-opted onto the board of directors of the multinationals, in cahoots with the western governments.

Oppression and tyranny, by creating an inferiority complex in people by a self-proclaimed master race, leaves deep psychological scars in the people, which might take generations, if ever to be healed or eradicated.  This has obviously not only been the case in South Africa, but also in eastern European countries, (Rumania for instance) - so that the worse the oppression, the worse the psychological trauma.

South Africa must be the only country in the world that did not celebrate one of its writers receiving the Nobel prize for literature.  Instead, the banner headlines all over the city were about some rugby player and his woes.  To add insult to injury, Nadine Gordimer, who had never helped or promoted Black writers throughout her life, suddenly made sure that she should be on all the state-run tv news channels that evening, announcing that she had set up an organisation to help young black writers.  Not a word about J M Coetzee.

In spite of the fact, that just about every South African has the attitude that he knows everything about everything - slamming their fists on the table to emphasise their point - the most arrogant people in the world must be the South African Transvaal Indian Muslim businessman: they are perhaps a little less ignorant, but are even more arrogant than the average American.  Being extremely petty, making it a point of knowing everything about everyone in the community, they are always judgemental, always knowing what is best for you.  And even if something is revealed to them about an incident that actually happened to a person, for instance saying, "I was attacked by a lion," they would immediately answer with a "Are you sure it wasn't just a cat," soon converting the whole episode into a joke at the expense of the victim.  Moreover, they have never opposed the oppression in the country - (then or now) - and are quite happy, as long as they can make money.

A reflection of this mentality is most evident in the richest Indian township under apartheid, Laudium, which once boasted the highest number of Mercedes Benzes per square kilometre in the world.  It is the dirtiest place I have ever come across - while there are all these mansions owned by rich businessmen, the streets and pavements outside their homes and businesses are littered with garbage - the owners not even bothering to order their many servants to clean up the mess.

South Africa - the only country without a name - is a country abandoned by God.  Instead of the wise people at the southern tip of Africa described by Marquez at the beginning of One Hundred Years Of Solitude, it is a godforsaken country without the faculty for reflecting and pondering.

Already in the 1980's South Africans began striving for mediocrity, by the 1990's they were striving for stupidity, and by the beginning of the 21st century, they were thriving on a combination of mediocrity and stupidity.  Unfortunately, with the ubiquity of the internet and stupid phones among all those who can afford it (or not), the whole world is now wallowing in this ignorance, mediocrity and stupidity.

It has always taken outsiders who have been in the country for a short period only, to see who South Africans really are.  Basil Davidson's Report On Southern Africa (1952), which gave an amazing insight into the people of South Africa, with a profundity that South Africans themselves refuse to acknowledge and are always reluctant to appreciate.  The book was obviously banned in South Africa throughout the apartheid era, and Basil himself was considered persona non grata after his visit, and was unfortunately never able to return to the country to give the people of South Africa another valuable insight into themselves during its many years of turmoil.

Another extremely incisive and perceptive view in capturing the essence of South Africa and its people in the 1985-1987 period, was the letter/poem, Where Blue Skies Cry In The Afternoon, by Jill Townsend.  I included it in my anthology, The Wind Still Sings Sad Songs, - (though it should rather have been part of A Celebration Of Flames, which captured the events and emotions of the mid 1980's in South Africa) - since I felt that Jill's poem was an essential part of the portrayal of the country, its people, and its turmoil.

WHERE BLUE SKIES CRY IN THE AFTERNOON
© Jill Townsend

The sun scorches
Where blue skies cry
In the afternoon

The land breathes
In cross-currents of emotions
Collisions of oceans and winds
Reflect the minds and spirit
Of the people

Complexities and contrasts
Flourish and divide
Into pockets of resistance
Spiritually uplifting
Emotionally draining
Ebbing away into vast flatlands

Tall towers mirror
Dark secret places

There is corruption in power
As there is corruption in suffering
Breeding greed, betrayal and guilt.

Today is negated
By tomorrow.
Today is always more important
Than yesterday.

Uniforms and rhetoric
Disguise the soul
Masks fit every face
But never the eyes
- The eyes
   always tell
   another story -
So that every truth
Is also a lie

THE HUMAN CATASTROPHE

THE HUMAN CATASTROPHE
© Farouk Asvat

In the 'civilized' 21st century, more people are dying from war, violence, persecution, malnutrition and preventable diseases than at any other time in history - in spite of the propaganda

In the technologically advanced 21st century, in spite of the meaningless slogans after the wars of the northern hemisphere - "never again" and "the war to end all wars" - more people are fleeing war, turmoil, and oppression than at any other time in history.

After the second ‘world’ war, and the atrocities of the German government, and the formation of the United Nations, the UN sanctioned its first war in 1950 - led by the United States against North Korea.

Then the US waged war against the people of Viet Nam, Cambodia and Laos, leading to at least 3 million refugees - this besides the massacre of civilians, and the deaths and atrocities inflicted against the people, with the use of agent orange and napalm.

In addition, the United States has been responsible for overthrowing the legitimate government of Mohammad Mossaddegh in Iran in 1953, for overthrowing the democratically elected government of Salvador Allende in Chile 1973, and for the military coup against the democratically elected government of the Muslim Brotherhood in 2013.

At the end of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, there is still human slavery and cannibalism, there is the massacre of a million children, women and men in Rwanda in 1994; the genocide of 100,000 people in East Timor in the 1990's; and the rape of Muslim women and the massacre of 27,000 Muslim men and boys in Europe in 1995.

From 1919 to 1939, five million refugees were accepted by the United States and Europe, after the Russian Revolution.  In 1956, 200,000 Hungarians were eagerly welcomed in Europe.
South Africa granted medical certificates to a boatload of people who had fled communist Poland - even though they had no documents to prove their claims.  The north Americans and Europeans were just too glad to accept people from the communist countries as a means for propaganda during the second ‘world’ war and the ‘cold’ war - even accepting convicted criminals from Cuba.

But the north American, European and Russian wars against Muslims has led to the displacement of an unprecedented number of deaths and refugees since the 1980's.

There are now at least 60 million refugees in the world, according to the United Nations.  People are fleeing the wars waged against them by the western governments - from Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Tunisia, amongst others.

The Russian war against Afghanistan led to more than 8 million people seeking refuge abroad: 4 million people to Iran and 4 million to Pakistan alone, besides those who were forced into exile in their own country; in addition to the large number of deaths and casualties inflicted upon the people of Afghanistan.  (The UNHCR has no figures for how many people actually fled Afghanistan from 1980 -1991!).

In the Russian genocide against the people of Chechnya in the 1990's, the atrocities against the people led to thousands of Muslims being massacred by the Russians.  (Again the UNHCR do not have statistics for these massacres or the number of refugees).

Then the Serbian war against Muslims led to 1 million people fleeing Bosnia and Herzegovina in the mid 1990's - in addition to the rape of Muslim women and the massacre of 27,000 Muslim men and boys.

After the extended occupation of Palestine and the increasing atrocities of the Israelis, there were already 96,000 people fleeing Palestine in 1990 alone.

In 2013 alone, 2.5 million people fled Iraq, where the western powers invaded a sovereign state more than a decade earlier, without any justification at all - to ‘impose’ western democracy, to steal oil, to destroy Iraq, and to defend Israel.

In Syria, at least 330,000 people have been killed, 8 million people have been internally displaced, and more than 4 million Syrians have fled abroad since 2011 - ie half the population in the country has been banished from their homes - of these 2 million people have sought refuge in Turkey, more than 1 million in Lebanon, and more than a million in other Arab countries, including Jordan, Saudi Arabia (labelled as ‘visitors’), Iraq, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Morocco.

Only now is there a ‘refugee crisis’ / ‘migrant crisis’ - now that 650,000 Muslims, are seeking refuge in Europe.

Of those countries most responsible for the wars against the Muslims, the USA and the UK have taken the least amount of refugees from any of these conflicts they have inflicted: the USA, for instance, has taken only 1,500 refugees from Iraq - mainly collaborators

Most of these statistics obviously do not include the sheer horror of war - it does not include the men, women and children who have been killed or maimed by these colonial invasions, by the landmines and depleted uranium bombs used by the western regimes and Israel; it does not include the people still facing turmoil in their own homes, those exiled in their own country, or the people banished from their own country - due to the aggression of the foreign forces.

Instead of addressing the root causes of why people leave their comfortable homes and businesses - (for which the western governments (including Russia) are responsible) - the western media keep blaming Assad, Iran, Hizb'Allah, ISIS and ‘traffickers’.  Instead, the blame lies squarely with the western perpetrators who have invaded all these sovereign states - with the collusion of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency.  Most of all, blame the United States; blame big Bush and little Bush; blame their poodle, Tony Blair - for the tortures, massacres, kidnappings and unsubstantiated wars; blame Clinton for bombing Afghanistan; blame Powell for justifying the invasion of Iraq; blame Obama for continuing the incarceration and torture of people without trial for 15 years, for continuing the wars, for killing innocent people with drones; blame the European nations for being minions of the US; blame Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Morocco for doing the bidding of their masters.  Blame Russia for invading Afghanistan, blame Putin for bombing guerilla fighters and civilians in Syria; but most of all blame the United States - the greatest threat to world peace - for invading Iraq again and again, for invading Afghanistan, for invading Syria - for the children, women and men fleeing their homes, for the deaths and the massacres of civilians.
